Brief History
James Burton actually started building the new town of St Leonards in 1826 although the land was once owned and settled by the Levett’s, a family that arrived with William the Conqueror. There is evidence in the north of the town, at Beauport Park, of ironworking which was carried out from Roman times until the Middle Ages.
