Transport

Road – The A273 passes through the western side of the town from the A23 at Pyecombe to  the south to Haywards Heath on the A272 to the north.Rail – The town is served by 2 stations, Burgess Hill Town and Wivelsfield. Both are on the Main London to Brighton Line, but at Wivelsfield there is a branch line, the East Coastway Line which runs to Hastings.


Brief History

From the sixteenth century a number of brickworks and potteries thrived and so a community began to develop. From 1830 to 1930, three-quarters of the town was predominantly brick, tile and pottery making works. The opening of the rail line to Brighton in 1841 enabled further expansion.Between 1850 and 1880 the area changed from an insignificant rural settlement to a town of 4,500 residents as professional people from Brighton began to look for places to live outside of that town.
