A good location for ramblers walking in the “High Weald” and the walk around the perimeter of Bewl Water. The historical towns of Hastings and Battle are within easy reach.


Attractions

Batemans – Rudyard Kiplings home at nearby Burwash
Bewl Water – Largest stretch of inland water in the south east. It features include sailing, canoeing, fishing and rowing.


Transport

Road – The village is situated on the A265 which runs from the A21 at Hurst Green in the east to Lewes in the west.
Rail – It is served by a railway station on the main Hastings to London line.


Brief History

There was a manor at Etchingham before the Norman Conquest. It was left to the De Achyngham family in 1166. the village grew around the manor house which stood where now the railway station stands.

John Burgess Wilson (aka Anthony Burgess – Novelist, most famously “A Clockwork Orange.”
Ashley Hutchings – A founder member of folk-rock bands Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span.
Shirley Collins – Folk-rock musician and singer (married to Ashley Hutchings).
