The town has become known as a centre for hikers and walkers who use it as a starting point when setting off along the South Downs.

Ovenden’s Mill – Fully working windmill (restored)
Drusilla’s Zoo Park – About 4 miles west of the town along the A27.
Cuckoo Trail – A hiking trail that passes through the town.


Transport

Road – Polegate lies on the A22 (London to Eastbourne road) and also the A27 (the South Coast Trunk Road)
Rail – The town has a railway station on the line between Hastings and Brighton.


Brief History

The town began as a small settlement of monks in the 13th century. It did not start to properly develop as a town until the railway arrived in the 1840’s.
