Brief History
There was a port at Rye during Roman times; its main service was to ship out the iron that was produced in the settlements scattered along the Weald. At the time of the Saxon king Ethelread the town was gifted to Fecamp Abby in Normandy and so was important in the trading between England and Normandy. As such Rye was made a “Limb” of the “Cinque Ports. Extremely heavy storms in the 13th century cut off the town from the sea and Rye was lost forever as a major port. The Royal Military Canal was completed in 1809 and formed part of the defences against the threat of Napoleon.
