Brief History

There is evidence of human activity going back to prehistoric and Roman times. Littlehampton has been a port since the days of the Romans when it was known as Hampton, but it only overtook Arundel as the river’s main harbour in the 1820’s. It wasn’t until the 14th Century that it became Little Hampton to differentiate it from the larger Southampton. The town started to develop from a fishing community to a holiday resort from the late 18th Century. The railway was brought to the town in 1863 and so making it very accessible to the holidaymaker.

Famous People

Dame Anita Roddick – Founder of The Body Shop was born in the town.
JM Barrie – Author (“Peter Pan”) spent a lot of time staying with a local family.
Hubert Parry – Composer – “Jerusalem” (Choral song) used at many sporting events.
