Brief History

Sometime between 6000 and 2300BC, in the period of the Middle Stone Age, the area of Weir Wood Reservoir was visited by hunter-gatherers as stone tools have been found. There is evidence of people settling in the area at that time. The Romans used the site as ironworks in the period between 70 and 210AD. A row of hunting lodges was built on the edge of the Ashdown Forest in early medieval times for the king and his nobles. The village then grew from this beginning. In 1631 the first mansion was built at Brambletye for the local MP, Sir Henry Compton.
